Steps Towards Making Your Dream Home a Reality

Every homeowner has upgrades they’ve always wanted to make, features they want to add, and add-ons they’ve only dreamed about.
Unfortunately, many people let these dreams slip by the wayside and they learn to settle for the features their homes had when they bought them.
But the truth is that you don’t have to settle for your home the way it is. Everyone can make upgrades to their home to help improve their quality of life and the fulfillment they take from their home.
My name is Brent W. Sears, I am a master craftsman, and for my entire career, I have helped homeowners turn their wildest dreams into everyday reality.
In this post, I wanted to share with you the steps it takes from transforming your dream home upgrades into a reality. Follow along to learn each step of home improvement from ideation to completion.
Your Guide to Creating Your Dream Home
Your dream home is within your reach! All it takes to get there is a clear vision, a set budget, and a healthy dose of patience.
Step One: Decide What You Want (And What You Don’t)!
Before anything else, you need to figure out what upgrades you want to make, and those that you don’t.
Ask yourself:
- What do I value in my home?
- What new features would I enjoy and how would they improve my life and my home's aesthetic?
- What aspects of my home do I currently dislike?
- What needs is my home currently not meeting?
- What needs must my home meet in the future?
- What are my must-haves?
- Where am I willing to compromise?
Your dream home isn’t always the most luxurious option, it’s the features that suit you the best. Consider your needs and don’t let outside pressures sway your decision.
Set a Fixed Budget
Your budget is one of the most important parts of home renovation.
For the best results, make a reasonable budget and plan for renovations over a period of years, not months.
Your budget shouldn’t break the bank, but it should be sizable enough to make profound upgrades.
Consider setting aside a yearly fund for moderate upgrades. If you try and splurge all at once, you are more likely to cut corners or neglect your home’s needs (in favor of wants) leading to more repairs or upgrades down the road.
Think of Your Lifestyle and Your Future
The best home you can have is the one that allows you to live your best life. The design and function of your home should match, and enhance your lifestyle.
You know what your life looks like now, but what will it look like in ten years? Will you have children? Will your children have moved away from home? Will you be retired? Will you have started a new career?
Try to envision your lifestyle ten years in the future and that will help you decide what you need to start planning for now.
Research Different Concepts
Take a walk around your home. Contemplate what each room has and how it could be improved.
Try to come up with your top three renovations, and consider which would be the most beneficial to your lifestyle.
Once you have determined the upgrade you will make, research different concepts to meet your goal.
For example, you may want to enhance your bathroom to make it a more cozy and relaxing space. Do you know what kind of flooring you want? Do you need heated floors, or can a heated mat make do? Does your tub need an upgrade (and if so what size and shape)?
There are many questions you must answer for each individual upgrade. Do some research on different design and architecture sites and magazines. Look through portfolios of craftsmen that you admire and try to pick out some features you would like to see replicated in your home.
Hire a Trusted Professional
Once you have the upgrades that you wish to make clearly defined, it is time to hire a professional to get the job done.
But before you hire just anyone, look into a few different professionals' backgrounds and portfolios. Do they do the kind of work you are looking for? Do they have the standards necessary to meet your home's style and aesthetic?
Once you have selected your top choice, meet with them and discuss your goals and ambitions.
Make sure you discuss the following:
- How you will work together on a detailed design so you can finish your space
- Ask them for their advice on making the necessary upgrades
- Develop a plan, budget, and timeline for your project
A qualified professional should be able to offer you several different options as well as advice on how to make the most of your budget.
